We are excited to announce that the official groundbreaking of The United Theatre complex will take place on Friday, May 17th at 1:30 p.m. in downtown Westerly, Rhode Island. The United Theatre board of directors, staff, and volunteers will be joined by local and regional dignitaries, project managers, and creative partners as they celebrate the start of construction on the project, which will include; a black box performing arts theatre; a first-run, two-screen art house and revival cinema; an arts education center featuring the Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School; a micro-cinema and flexible lobby and events space; a Westerly-based public radio bureau; and more.
To date, $10 million has been raised towards the project’s $12 million fundraising goal, including $2.37 million from the Rhode Island Creative and Cultural Economy Bond. Construction is set to take place over the next year, with a grand opening estimated for the Fall of 2020.
The United is undergoing comprehensive renovations to both the original theatre, as well as the adjacent, connected former Montgomery Ward building to create a vibrant arts complex which includes multi-use venues and a world-class education center. As an organization, The United is working with other cultural, creative, and education-driven organizations throughout the region to form partnerships to further position the space as a community center for the arts. Current program partners include the Rhode Island Philharmonic & Music School, the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, Rhode Island’s Public’s Radio, and others. Additionally, The United Theatre and its sister-venue, downtown Westerly’s Knickerbocker Music Center, together will create a multi-venue campus for the arts built on attracting national headliners and world-class live entertainment to the region.
