THE BERKLEE SILENT FILM ORCHESTRA PRESENTS THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

 

THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2015 at 7:30pm

 

The Berklee Silent Film Orchestra (BSFO) is dedicated to composing new, original scores for silent classics and performing them live. Based at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, in the world’s only undergraduate degree program in film scoring, this all-student orchestra has written and performed for nine silent features under the direction of three-time Emmy nominee and Berklee Professor of Film Scoring Sheldon Mirowitz (Outside Providence, Missing in America).

 

The BSFO’s scores for Sunrise, It, Battleship Potemkin, Piccadilly, Faust, Our Hospitality, Safety Last!, Phantom of the Opera, and for The Last Laugh have been commissioned by the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, Massachusetts, as part of its The Sounds of Silents® program. The recipient of a Special Commendation from the Boston Society of Film Critics, the BSFO has also played Boston’s historic Cutler Majestic Theatre, the Nantucket Film Festival, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The Phantom of the Opera is the orchestra’s eighth silent feature film score. This marks the BSFO's first appearance at the United Theater.

TRIPLE HELIX (PRESENTED BY MUSIC FOR FOOD)

When the award-winning and internationally known Triple Helix musicians—violinist Bayla Keyes, cellist Rhonda Rider, and pianist Lois Shapiro—joined together in 1995, The Boston Globe described the results of their union as “the livest live music in town,” with “wildly imaginative, emotionally charged, virtuoso playing” that was “sophisticated in musical detail, wholeheartedly interactive, uninhibited in emotion, and touched by a special grace.” Subsequently, the ensemble has become known as one of the best piano trios on today’s musical landscape.

 

Triple Helix is presented by the charity "Music For Food" founded by violist Kim Kashkashian. This event is a benefit for the Jonnycake Center of Westerly and the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center. Attendees are encouraged to bring monetary donations to benefit both organizations.

 

A NIGHT OF COMEDY WITH KEN ROGERSON & STACY KENDRO

A national headliner, and central part of the now famous and infamous exploding Boston comedy scene of the 1980's, Ken Rogerson has performed all over the world. A favorite at Festivals, he appeared at The Boston Comedy Festival with Lewis Black and Friends and the TBS Comedy Festival in Las Vegas. Ken has also appeared on numerous television shows including the F/X series “Rescue Me,” ABC’s “It’s All Relative,” "Late Night with Conan O'Brien", "The Late Show with David Letterman", "Comics Come Home" and more.

 

Stacy Kendro has made her way through the comedy scene, from LA to NYC, to cultivate a unique voice that comes from a diverse performing background. She has appeared on the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, PAXTV's Marshall's Women of Comedy with Caroline Rhea, the Boston Comedy Festival, the New York Laughing Devil Festivals and opened for Joan Rivers.

Trumpet virtuoso Bruce Harris returns after his electrifying 2014 performance at the United Theatre. This time, Harris is coming back with a whole new ensemble for a night of Jazz that's sure to be nothing short of amazing.

 

In a 2013 Ebony Magazine article, Legendary Jazz Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis highlighted Bruce as one of the five important young jazz musicians you should know. Bruce is one of the young cornerstones at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York, and their new sister establishments in Doha, Qatar, and Shanghai China, where he has been invited to bring his band for weekly residencies. He has also toured regularly around the world as a member of one of the most classic and important Jazz big bands, The Count Basie Orchestra.

TIME & TIDE FILM FESTIVAL

 

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2015 at 7:00pm

 

Time & Tide is an action sports film festival celebrating the currents of life. In this, the festival's first year, two local film production companies will showcase world premiere short films ahead of a screening of Bruce Brown's classic 1994 surf documentary; Endless Summer II. Those two local companies include Westerly based Gnarly Bay, showcasing their new short film Space, and the Yawgoons, a local snowboarding film troupe premiering their latest compilation short.

 

Tickets for the festival are free and first come first serve, though donations are appreciated. Donations will go towards both The United Theatre renovation project and Save the Bay. Westerly based craft brewers Grey Sail will also be on-hand sharing free beer for ticket holders 21 and older. An after party will take place at The Malted Barley directly following the festival.

SALT MARSH OPERA PRESENTS 'LA CENERENTOLA'

 

FRIDAY, MAY 20, 2016 at 7:30pm

 

Salt Marsh Opera returns with a fully staged performance of Gioachino Rossini’s 'La Cenerentola' (Cinderella) with piano accompaniment. 'La Cenerentola' is a variation of the traditional Cinderella story, with the wicked stepmother replaced by a wicked stepfather, Don Magnifico, and the Fairy Godmother replaced by Alidoro, a philosopher and the Prince's tutor. In La Cenerentola, Cinderella is identified not by her glass slipper but by her bracelet.

Francis and Jane Gencarelli, high school sweethearts themselves, play Andy and Melissa.

 

As the blue-blooded children of two high-society families, Andy and Melissa begin corresponding in 1937, when they're in second grade. In fits and starts they keep their correspondence going. They are shipped off to different boarding schools, attend college, fall in love with different people, marry, and divorce, have children and struggle with addictions. Andy does everything by the book and becomes a senator; Melissa strays from the beaten path, trying to be an artist. Their connection deepens across the years even as life keeps them apart.

 

Their beautiful story is told through their letters, written to each other over a lifetime.

RI ARTS BLOCK PARTY (FREE EVENT)

 

SATURDAY, JULY 30, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:30pm

 

The United Theatre is excited to announce The RI Arts Block Party (Downtown Westerly), a one-night event in Downtown Westerly celebrating Rhode Island’s vibrant arts scene. From 6-8:30 PM, The United Theatre will host a block party closing down the Canal Street block between Railroad Avenue and High Street in Downtown Westerly. A stage at the center of the street will feature a revolving lineup of acts from Rhode Island’s most acclaimed arts organizations, including The Chorus of Westerly, the Colonial Theatre - Shakespeare in the Park, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra Music School, Trinity Repertory Company and more. Details on the acts as well as additional acts from other Rhode Island artists and organizations will be announced in the days leading up to the event.

 

Downtown Westerly has experienced a cultural renaissance as of late, with exciting arts venues, a calendar full of local cultural events, a rich music scene and unique local shops, café’s, and restaurants. At the center of it all is WRAP - Westerly Regional Arts Partnership, a local non-profit whose mission it is to advocate for the arts and promote the Westerly region as an arts destination. WRAP will be hosting various live acts and smaller arts events at Downtown Westerly businesses throughout the night, including the Artists' Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, Laurie's Gallery & Art Learning Center, Maize n Manna Wholefoods, the Savoy Bookshop and Cafe, The Twisted Vine, The United Theatre and others.

SALT MARSH OPERA PRESENTS GIANNI SCHICCHI

FRIDAY, MAY 5TH - 7:30 PM

 

It's 1299 and poor old Buoso Donati lies dead upon his curtained four-poster bed. Mournful relatives have gathered, mouthing appropriately pious sentiments, yet secretly craving the reading of his will. What will become of Buoso's fortune? Will they have a part? Yet soon curiosity turns to rage. All of it goes to the monastery! And that unexpected reversal unleashes a torrent of trickery, bribery and hilarity. What fun!

WRAP TALKS - OPERA 101

Join WRAP - the Westerly Regional Arts Partnership, for the exciting May addition of their WRAP TALKS series with “Opera 101,” a discussion on the art and form of opera (including live music) from singers Brian Cheney and Sarah Callinan, director Josh Shaw and Salt Marsh Opera Artistic Director Simon Holt.

 

The event is FREE (with a suggested donation of $5) and open to the public, and will take place at The United Theatre beginning at 6:00 PM.

 

UNITED FOLK FESTIVAL

The 2017 United Folk Festival, The United Theatre's signature, FREE music festival, is set to take place on Saturday, July 1st from Noon-9pm in Wilcox Park, downtown Westerly, RI. Please welcome to the lineup... Blitzen Trapper, The Barr Brothers, Langhorne Slim, Michael Nau, Woods, The Low Anthem, My bubba, Elvis Perkins, Luke Temple, Little Wings, Barna Howard and Wild Sun!

 

The United Folk Festival is presented by The United Theatre in downtown Westerly, RI - Uniting the community through the arts.

 

We're excited to have artist/musician Sean W Spellman of Quiet Life leading the United Folk Festival's Artist Advisory Committee, which is responsible for selecting a diverse mix of acts representing a unique, international lineup for the festival. The Committee is made up of a number of New England based musicians, creatives and event coordinators who are excited to create a FREE music festival for the region.
